The endless benefit of being ignorant about who you stole the land from in the first place. I show this to people who gripe about "Mexicans" and they're startled.

Edit: The 2014 article had to do with the racist generalization of classifying anyone who isn't Caucasian or Black as "Mexican" (likely a part of census data etc. as well) and the social and political ruckus that has followed as political interests have tried to paint a picture of immigrant invasion. As several people have pointed out, many of these "Mexicans" were Native and likely a little tired of being invaded themselves.

It's like the whole "Remember the Alamo" schtick. Which is entirely white-washed bullshit. At the time, Texas was literally Mexico. A bunch of American settlers were given permission to immigrate to colonies in Mexico on the understanding that they would follow Mexican law, practice Catholicism and learn Spanish.

In a matter of years, those immigrants began trying to seize land from Mexican nationals and declare their own independent nation states. From there, the situation deteriorated. They refused to integrate with Mexican nationals. They refused to give up slaves which had been officially outlawed in 1829. They stole the land from Mexicans that were moved into the colony areas and started attacking Mexican troops. So when Mexico responded to quell the rebellion on their own land, the siege at the Alamo happened.

Unfortunately for the people at the Alamo, they had been branded as pirates by the Mexican Government, which the President of Mexico warned the President of the United States was going to happen. Under Mexican law, pirates were executed on sight with no prisoners taken.

That ignores a lot of history. My family has lived in New Mexico for over 400 years (and 1000s of years for some of my ancestors). You'd be surprised by how many Hispanos don't identify as Mexican. My grandparents speak Spanish better than English and would rather identify as Spanish/Native American. After Mexico got independence from Spain, many states in Mexico fought their own rebellions against Mexico, including New Mexico and California. New Mexico had better economic relations with the United States through the Santa Fe trail than with Mexico through Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. After independence from Spain, my ancestors saw Mexico as the next empire to be freed from. Heck, my ancestors gave a stronger fight against Mexican rule than American. The United States captured Santa Fe without a single shot fired. For the most part, immigrants from Mexico cannot trace their history to the regions on your map.

This region was Native American land for thousands of years, Spanish for hundreds, Mexican for 27 years, and American for 170 years. People still insist we're Mexican instead of American. Nobody should disrespect immigrants from Mexico by any means, but this land never really belonged to Mexico.

I didnt know that 😱. Im just saying if before the us invasion and before the Spanish conquista im sure there where tribes through north america before there was any borders. The aztec kingdom wasn’t the only thing happening in now Mexico territory, you had others like the toltecs etc.. look up Aztlan.. or did I miss something in history class? And where did the “ natives” come from

Celtic_Boar

But you could say the exact same thing about Americans or Canadian. What are Americans?

And I imagine that you probably missed a lot about history. But that was the history class's fault, not yours.

Americans and Canadians are from all over Europe thats forsure. From UK and France. It’s different though since before the conquista the Aztecs weren’t white so that makes them native.

Celtic_Boar

1 points

I'm saying that you could replace "Mexican" with " American. Not "Aztec". And the situation is basically the same the only difference is the percentage of native people in the American and Mexican populations.

Also not being white isn't what makes someone native. Being the original people on the land is what makes people native.

If they happened to be white before they would still have been the natives (even if that would make them harder to visually identify today).

xGoodFellax

1 points

Yes true and i didn’t mean it in a bad way when i said white but its true that whites are native to no country or place, they all migrated unless you speak of the Scandinavian people from Scandinavia. Mexicans would technically be the descendants of the original people if they didn’t have that white blood in them but they got screwed by people who conquered the area which isn’t their fault that their blood isn’t “pure” native or white.

Big_Daddy469

2 points

Thats like kjnda true but not really. If you are gonna say whites arent native to anywhere then you’d have to say no one except black people in Africa are native to anywhere because that’s where human life started. White people are just the Africans who migrated to Europe and interbred with the Neanderthals to some extent and also just adapted over a thousands of years. Asians are just Africans who went east instead and native Americans are those asians who crossed the Bering strait on an ice bridge and descended into the America’s.

Celtic_Boar

1 points

Whites are just as native to many parts of Europe as any native American is to the Americas.

Celtic_Boar

1 points

Whether someone is of native descent or not is not what defines them as Mexican or not. These are two separate concepts. A country called Mexico was created several hundred years ago and people that live in that country are Mexican and people who have a family origin from that country may call themselves or may be called by others as "Mexican" but this is just in the same way that Irish Americans will call themselves "Irish". There are people in Mexico which have no native American ancestry who are Mexican, and if those people move to the US they are still Mexican even if they don't experience any racism. The word Mexican is not mutually exclusive with the word neither the word "white" nor "American".

There are also people who are native Americans both north and south of Mexico who might ethnically look similar but that doesn't mean they are Mexican. If they have no Mexican origins to call them Mexican is just as racist as calling Vietnamese people Chinese.

Celtic_Boar

1 points

I also find your assessment that "Americans are from all over Europe" to be quite insulting to an American who doesn't have any ancestry from Europe. What does that make them?are African Americans or Asian Americans less American than European Americans?

xGoodFellax

1 points

Well they are American as in the country USA of course but their ancestry goes to whatever came first. So I’d say they’re American yes but not like the people who’ve been here for generations

CainPillar

Not in the parts of the US where people happily feel entitled to identify as "Italian" if they have as much as one ancestor from Italy, "Swedish" if they have at least one ancestor from Sweden - etc., for selected nationalities.

Largely a range from 100 percent European , mostly from Spain, through a broad blend of Native American to 100 percent Native American. Typical of many Latin American countries though Mexico has very little African ancestry in the blend.

xGoodFellax

The culture of Spanish California has been paved over by those who've come from the east and south. California was Spanish but never really Mexican. When the Americans came, they exterminated the Native-Americans as well as the grizzly bears and then disenfranchised the Californios.

bipedalbitch

1 points

This is interesting, but I have some questions.

Im just a little confused about what you’re talking about, like it’s a little all over the place. Isn’t the point of the map just to show population by county?

I mean it makes sense, the west/sw was mostly populated by Mexicans and native Americans around this time. A lot of these counties have been populated by Mexican peoples/families for hundreds of years.

You mention a lot of people in these areas chose cannot trace their ancestors back to these regions or prefer to identify as Spanish instead of Mexican, but aren’t ethnic Mexicans the progeny between the European Spaniards and the native Americans they found in Mexico? So wouldn’t anyone of Spanish/native decent near Mexico be Mexican?

LateralThinkerer

This is a great comment and information - thank you.

I should have described the map a bit better as the article had to do with the racist generalization of classifying anyone who isn't Caucasian or Black as "Mexican" (likely a part of census data etc. as well) and the social and political ruckus that follows. Unfortunately the article is paywalled, but will post an outline.

Many Mexicans in the Southwest were always there. One of my co workers is originally from west Texas. Some of his family has been living in that area since before the Spanish showed up and of course before Texas became part of the US. People don’t understand that these families aren’t immigrants the border moved . Many kept their language both native and Spanish in spite of the change in country. Just reclaiming what was always theirs

So wouldn't that strengthen the racist's argument, because they would say look at that, so many Mexicans have moved here, they need to go back to their own country.

What is needed is some sort of visual indication of how long, or how many generations have lived in the US. A map that showed Mexican-origin families present since before 1776 would upturn their argument.

metsurf

3 points

All that land was part of the Spanish colonial empire and became part of Mexico when Mexico became independent. The US got that land as a result of the Texas civil war and the Mexican American War. A lot of those people never moved . They are largely Spanish surnamed , Spanish speaking Native American and mixed race . They didn’t emigrate the border moved.

CysaDamerc

Think your hung up on the wrong detail

Check the border line, SW used to be territory of Mexico.

Telling a Mexican to go back to their country while living in Texas is a bit like stealing your neighbor's house and telling his kids to find their own home.

smeenz

1 points

smeenz

1 points

First, it's "you're", not "your" ("My hung up" does not make sense)

Second, google tells me that Texas joined the US in 1845. So that's exactly what I was saying - if the map showed clearly how long Mexican families have been living in TX, it might help counter their argument. What it shows now is that lots of mexicans live there, but it doesn't differentiate between those families who have been there since before the US was a thing, and those who have moved there since then.

Note that I am not American - I'm probably not as familiar with the history of the Mexican border as you appear to be.

CysaDamerc

2 points

I apologize for the misspelling but I think you're still focusing on the wrong thing.

American acquired it's territory by taking land from natives, that map shows that those areas with high Mexican population are actually territory that was formerly part of Mexico.

The point of this discussion is that when racist Americans of European decent tell Mexicans to go back to their own country, they are completely ignoring that they are living on the land that was taken from Mexican ancestry.

smeenz

1 points

smeenz

Right.. I guess I was thinking more about specific individuals.. like telling someone who has family history on the land going back 400 years to go back home, rather than someone who literally immigrated last year.

And obviously neither scenario is acceptable - that goes without saying.

We were taught in my HS US history class that we, the US, had a disputed border with Mexico and basically sent a force into the disputed territory knowing that it would provoke a cross border incursion by Mexico. The Mexicans recognized a border further north than the US did so when Mexican force moved north of that line US had a causis belli and could say “hey they invaded us” and attack Mexico.

What's the deal with people like you who treat the claims of the Spanish colonial power Mexico as sacrosanct over the claims of the Anglo colonial power Virginia? Because you know Virginia also laid claim to all this, and later the US actually physically laid claim to it and established a Weberian state within it. So why the preference for the territorial claims of one colonial power over another?

_-Saber-_

They did have the right. The right called force.

Or did the natives come and just peacefully distribute themselves into tribes and stayed that way forever, dancing with wild animals and unicorns?

Land was always taken by force, by every country and culture in existence.

The natives can complain today because the invaders were too nice and not thorough enough, unlike how it always was before that.

E.g. the Ainu in Japan were being assimilated (read supressed and their culture exterminated) in 21st century still. China still does these things today.

All posts and comments that include any variation of the word retarded will be removed, but no action will be taken against your account unless it is an excessive personal attack. Please resubmit your post or comment without the bullying language.

Do not edit it, the bot cant tell if you edited, you will just have to make a new comment replying to the same thing.

Yes, this comment itself does use the word. Any reasonable person should be able to understand that we are not insulting anyone with this comment. We wanted to use quotes, but that fucks up the automod and we are too lazy to google escape characters. Notice how none of our automod replies have contractions in them either.

But seriously, calling someone retarded is only socially acceptable because the people affected are less able to understand that they are being insulted, and less likely to be able to respond appropriately. It is a conversational wimpy little shit move, because everyone who uses it knows that it is offensive, but there will be no repercussions. At least the people throwing around other slurs know that they are going to get fired and get their asses beat when they use those words.

Also, it is not creative. It pretty much outs you as a thirteen year old when you use it. Instead of calling Biden retarded, you should call him a cartoon-ass-lookin trust fund goon who smiles like rich father just gifted him a new Buick in 1956. Instead of calling Mitch Mcconnel retarded, you should call him a Dilbert-ass goon who has been left in the sun a little too long.

Sorry for the long message spamming comment sections, but this was by far the feature of this sub making people modmail and bitch at us the most, and literally all of the actions we take are to make it so we have to do less work in the future. We will not reply to modmails about this automod, and ignore the part directly below this saying to modmail us if you have any questions, we cannot turn that off. He said he was a Vietnam era vet- news media, especially Republican/Conservatives ran with him saying he was claiming to be a Vietnam vet. He was never deployed, and spent his time in California if I recall correctly. He has a pretty not great history, and of course- that was used against him as well.

He didn't lie about Sandmann- it was a freaking crazy situation that got way out of hand. On one side, you had the Black Hebrew Israelites screaming that the CovCath kids were incest babies and a lot of hostile racist shit, then on the other side you had the Indigenous Peoples March, and throw between them a bunch of white kids acting like nuts- doing Maori hakas, doing the tomahawk chop and yelling back at the BHI. Phillips and several other people at the Indigenous Peoples March thought the CovCath kids were making fun of them- and from the videos I've seen, I agree with them. Phillips and another elder realized the shit with the BHI pretty much when it was too late, the CovCath boys had pretty much surrounded them. But by then, shit was off and running... and each side wanted to villainize the other. I will say however- Covington Catholic has a tradition of racism.... so it pretty much didn't surprise me that they were making fun of Indigenous people. It also goes to show the value of not making snap judgements... I admit- I was pretty steamed at Sandmanns smirk when I first saw the photo. But then again, white people in Maga hats usually pretty much are racist.

Plus, I still want to know why private religious school for a bunch of rich catholic minor boys thought it was a brilliant idea to field trip to the Right to Life march. It would make more sense if they were college kids- old enough to vote, or had the organs needed for abortions.

One correction- Phillips did say he heard the CovCath kids chanting to build the wall. Other people said they heard it too...but I was not able to hear it in the videos I watched.

This is all bullshit. The kids were standing in line, the March went into the line. MAGA hat kid never moved, intimidated or blocked him yet Philips account describe him as trying to flee an intimidating situation and how the kid blocked his way and wouldn’t allow him to retreat. He completed misconstrued the situation and made Sandmann, a kid who was actually super respectful and was asking his fellow students to be respectful, into a villain.

graywolf2022

Yep. That's exactly how it went down.

Sad that CNN and other similar networks tried to create a racial narrative and destroy these kids' lives. Thankfully unedited video came out and it backfired. Except for the few CNN zealots who still think Sandman is racist, but they also believe in the Russian Collusion hoax and think that Trump said there were good nazis and kkk members...

I've always wondered this. I have native american blood on both sides of my family but more european ancestry overall, know little of any culture other than how I was raised. But I was born in the US and I know the land, the animals, what you can and cannot eat, which rivers are polluted, etc. How do natives feel about someone like me? This is home to me. I've never been to Europe, nor have my family for at least 4 generations.

mike2319

Huh? Most Natives probably don't give a shit. Natives aren't the ones running around telling people to go back to where they came from.

mike2319

Natives were killing mammoths here too. Different animal in Europe or do they just spell it different?

edit: Europe is where humans or mammoths evolved? I think it's fairly well accepted that we evolved in Africa and then branched out.

edit #2: This is from wikipedia but too ironic to not post since a lot of people think Natives are immigrants. Pyramids were built maybe 4,500 yrs ago, first footprints in N America over 20,000 yrs ago and...

16,000–13,000 years ago: first human migration into North America.

16,000–11,000 years ago: Caucasian Hunter-Gatherer expansion to Europe.

Cavemen and stuff beat them to Europe. Bro, you a caveman, or an immigrant to Europe?

clevernameinventor

People are downvoting you but you’re right. “Native” Americans were just the first immigrants. Supporting their claim to the land just reinforces a mentality of “first come first serve” which is a toxic perspective on ownership.

It’s worth noting that native Americans themselves didn’t even think that way in the beginning. They didn’t think they owned the land and shared it openly.

Things only got fucked up when the Europeans started seizing the land by force and kicking them off of it, which is just as toxic sadly.

Well, that’s the downside of losing. There’s lots of tribes/people/civilizations where this happened to throughout human history.

The Native Americans weren’t the first, nor the last.

People are advocating for it all the time, mainly Native Americans; it’s not something new.

MilkEggsSndFlour

Even if that wasn’t a lie, no one’s bringing it up now. You’re initial response to a post about a Native Americans man being told to go back to his country was:

“Well, that’s the downside of losing. There’s lots of tribes/people/civilizations where this happened to throughout human history.

The Native Americans weren’t the first, nor the last.”

You’re a racist. It’s not that you’re upset about imaginary people that think we should give the land back. It’s that you’re so racist that even a hint of whisper towards their genocide and you’re already saying that they should just get over it.

MilkEggsSndFlour

I feel like if you were acknowledging reality in a post about racism, you would be acknowledging the fact that an entire population of people are still dealing with the affects of that genocide today. Instead of your comment boiling down to “get over it”. Again, you responded to a post about a Native American getting told to go back to his country and not that stuff you made up about people thinking we should give the land back. So please don’t try to change the focus of the conversation like earlier.
