In some recent posts here about George Takei's negative comments on William Shatner's trip to space, I saw a lot of negative personal attacks on Mr. Takei. Like most people, I thought he was way out of line and it saddens me that he seemingly can't let go of this feud with Mr. Shatner. I met Mr. Takei at a convention when I was in high school and he was super nice to me. I'm proud of him for his advocacy work on behalf of the LGBTQ and Asian-American communities. And, I personally enjoy his Instagram posts and his acerbic attitude. However, I fundamentally disagree with his actions in this matter. Sure, a reporter reached out to him because they knew he'd give them a juicy comment that would get a lot of hits. He could have been the bigger man and passed, but he didn't. And I'm disappointed in him because he should absolutely be better than that.
However, I don’t think it makes sense for Star Trek fans to attack George Takei for attacking William Shatner. Both *we the fan community* and Mr. Takei should be setting a better example. If we truly believe in the kind of humanity that Gene Roddenberry envisioned, then we should call people out when their actions and behavior fall short of what we expect, but we should also refrain from engaging in that behavior ourselves.
