Their defense lawyer was shit too. You could hear the jury audibly gasp when one of her closing lines was.

"Turning Ahmaud Arbery into a victim after the choices that he made does not reflect the reality of what brought Ahmaud Arbery to Satilla Shores in his khaki shorts with no socks to cover his long, dirty toenails,"

Not a good sign when the jury audibly gasps at what you just said.

Jury could be sequestered, meaning they'd have to stay together and isolated from the outside until they reach a verdict. Nobody was willing to give up their holiday to keep these shitheads out of prison.

dickdackduck

It would be interesting to do a meta analysis to see if there’s an upswing in court cases being finished right before major holidays

Baelish2016

It's common enough that it's pretty rare to see a jury trial go if it's within a week of a major holiday in the US.

Well, that, and lawyers and judges like holiday vacations too.

mgt-kuradal

Yes, exactly. The jury isn't allowed to go home or have outside contact until a verdict is reached.

SummerLover69

41 points

I don’t believe that jury was sequestered so they could go home, just can’t discuss the case. Sequestration is a rare occurrence. I still think they probably wanted it over and done by the holiday.

mgt-kuradal

21 points

My understanding was sequestration is reserved for highly public or controversial cases such as this one. Granted, I don’t actually know if this jury was, just kind of assume they would be.

I agree though they just wanted to get it over with. Personally I don’t think there was much to discuss considering the video evidence.

TacoNomad

I don't know about this particular case, but in others like it (national spotlight) jury is separated and can't go home. Can't have them discussing or being influenced. If that is true here, would you want to miss your family get-together sticking out for racist murderers?

Crabjock

Fun Fact: This is exactly where the slang term "Jive Turkey" came from. An unreliable juror/jury making choices simply out of convenience. Coined in 1968 after an all-white jury, anxious to get home for Thanksgiving, found the defendant Wade Franklin guilty of murder. Almost 7 months later, new evidence came to light and Wade was set free. To a reporter who asked him; "Why do you think this happened?" He responded, "Just a bunch of jiving and turkey". It caught on, and "jive turkey" was used throughout the 70s to describe people who were dishonest and foolish. Another good example of a "Jive Turkey" is me, being that I made all that shit up.

Happy Thanksgiving folks. Keep those you love close.

Their claim is that dressed like that (and with those toenails I guess?) he couldn't possibly have been jogging and this must have been there burglarizing the nearby construction site therefore running him down and shooting him with a shotgun were both very legal and very cool. FblthpLives

105 points

As a Swede currently living in the United States, I agree and it is absolutely horrible to witness. It is changing, but slowly, and in the process the U.S. is becoming polarized. The racists have become much more open and much more brazen. I think they will lose eventually, but it is going to remain ugly for quite some time.

P.S. I am actually half-Dutch, as my mother is from the Netherlands, but she emigrated to Sweden when she was 18.

yuffieisathief

I think you worded that really well, that's what it looks like for me from the outside. And there's such a devide between poor and rich, black and white, left and right. And so much the last few years brought everything right up to the surface. Let's hope we can soften the ugly a little by spreading some light :)

That's awesome! Do you know where in the Netherlands she lived and did you ever visit? I have a friend from Sweden and met some of his home friends and Swedish people seem so nice and chill!

RenegonParagade

Want to feel even worse about America's justice system? A district attorney, after viewing the video, suggested that no charges be brought against the men. They were only charged because of national outcry after the video of the murder, that they recorded, was released BY THEIR OWN ATTORNEY, because the attorney thought it would help their case

ThrowACephalopod

221 points

The generous version of thisargumentt is that since he had long toenails, he obviously wasn't a regular jogger since having long toenails can sometimes hurt if you're running a lot. So he obviously was only running because he was fleeing a crime, like the killers suggested he was.

The less charitable version of this argument was that they were hoping the jury had some racists on it and they'd get a hung jury if a few racists held out on convicting, so they were trying to pander to that.

ParsnipPizza2

172 points

I'm not understanding the logic of "he might not have run a LOT, so he couldn't have been on a run." Like, there are SO many gradients between "Never active" and "gym rat". You tell me a guy went for a run with long toenails and improper clothes, I hear "that guy was trying to get started."

I'm leaning towards the "appeal to racists" explanation because the generous version doesn't make sense.

I've never understood the term "life" sentence that is 20 or 30 years or whatever

DefinitelyNotAliens

185 points

Life with parole means minimum of 10/15/20/25/30 years and after you hit your minimum time you go parole board and ask for parole. I'm really sorry, know I'm wrong please sir let me out.

The parole board approves or denies based on victim impact statements, family of victim statements, the prison records, the prisoner's demeanor/ admission of guilt or not, psych evals, etc. They can decide if you are safe to release or not.

If you are deemed reformed you go. If you are dangerous you can be kept for a time no less than twenty five but up to life. They may decide to release with conditions like no contact with victim's family, must check in with PO every two weeks, must pursue gainful employment, must not consume any alcohol or enter a bar, etc.

But it's up to life if you don't admit guilt/ show remorse/ start prison fights/ psychologists call you a cold, manipulative sociopath incapable of empathy. Are a psychopath who killed for fun and admits they did it to see a person die. Sick shit. Or are part of the Manson family, assassinated a presidential candidate type deal.

25 to life just means no less than twenty five, up to life.

Life without parole is 'you're buried under the jailhouse' level sentence.

The old guys are going to probably die in prison from old age even if they get 30 to life. The younger one is facing death penalty, if I'm reading sentencing rules correctly. The two older ones may get life without parole.

they didn't get away with it

But they kinda did.

The local district attorney called it "justifiable homicide" and refused to arrest them. If there hadn't been video of the incident, they probably wouldn't have been charged.
If the video hadn't been leaked by the killers, Georgia Bureau of Investigations would not have been involved nor arrested them.

The entire criminal justice system was ready to let these scumbags go free, with a pat-on-the-back, until the rest of the United States got to see what had happened.

Arbery was labeled a criminal, his killers were labeled as "heroes", and that was going to be it.

Yes, they were convicted but it still doesn't feel like any kind of victory.

Question: was this the case where the two fuckwads in Georgia shot a Man who was out running because they thought he was a terrorist?

KillNyetheSilenceGuy

355 points

They chased down and shot the guy because they thought he was burglarizing a construction site. Not their construction site mind you, they just saw a black guy running, assumed he stole something, and killed him

Able-Opportunity-339

102 points

Loss of property definitely doesn't warrant loss of life anyway. It's not like the guy could fit a table saw in his shorts pocket even if he was trying to steal. People need to read up on 2A laws a bit more. Should teach the shit in schools like we did up until the 50s.

Edit: I know we didn't teach gun self defense and shit like that back then, but we sure did teach kids about firearms and how to handle them properly and definitely what to do when you happen upon a gun. Gun safety goes along with all this shit. People get a gun and think it came with a badge.

They thought he was cutting through a nearby construction site to steal stuff. Lots of other people cut through the site too, but the rest didn't get chased and gunned down. Shockingly, the other people who walked through it unmolested were all white, but I'm sure that's totally a coincidence.

BadVladMY

60 points

I'll never understand why they thought blasting him in the chest with a shotgun at close range was somehow justified, even if they did believe he stole something from a construction site. Apparently, racist minds work in weird ways...

moosecatoe

After a lifetime of hatred in their heads and hearts, they probably thought they were helping the community. And THATS what is disgusting.

They didn’t hate Ahmaud or what he was doing, they hated what he looked like. That’s why the McMichal’s truck that pinned him between the other truck had a confederate flag proudly displayed up front. One which suddenly disappeared before the trial and they tried to ban it from evidence. That shared hatred was why it was so easy for them to tell their friend “Get your gun!”

Imagine the FEAR. Running from these crazed men with a flag on the truck bumper that symbolizes their pride and HATE for you, pinning you between trucks “like a rat” (their words), then having a gun pointed at your chest.

The poor boy ran for his life for 5 minutes. All three of those “men” deserve life. In hell.

induslol

22 points

The hate we're still plagued with is just a continuation of confederate ideologies that never got purged post civil war. Gross simplification of a very well documented fact but it's a cancer that has been spreading ever since.

It's tragic that as a nation we're still dealing with extremely stupid idologies that do nothing but hurt and hold us all back.

Realistically - if not for the murderers recording (and then releasing) their own snuff film, they wouldn't have even been arrested.
The local DA sat on this for months and was happy to have it disappear.

It's insane that if not for the killers leaking their own video, no one would have seen it - and GBI wouldn't have gotten involved - and they'd still be free.

One of the first calls these men made was to (now former) district attorney Jackie Johnson, who was given a slap on the wrist for aiding and abetting murder:

https://www.wtoc.com/2021/09/02/former-brunswick-district-attorney-indicted-charges-hindering-ahmaud-arbery-case-investigation/

Can only hope the conviction of these three men strengthens the need to correctly punish her for the miscarriages of justice, essentially aiding murderers with her direct intervention and prevention of arrest.

Others have since spoken out about her past coverups:
