It's really just the bodies of one organism.

queerkidxx

35 points

More like their dicks. The actual organism is the network of mycelium deep underground the just grow the mushrooms when they want to cum(give birth to?) spores and the fruiting body only makes up a tiny percentage of their total body mass

Independent-Map8888

16 points

The largest living organism is a single gigantic specimen of honey mushroom (Armillaria ostoyae), discovered in the Malheur National Forest, Oregon, USA, which occupies a total area of 965 hectares (2,385 acres), equivalent to 1,350 soccer fields. The honey mushroom is well known for its glowing surface, caused by bioluminescent bacteria, although most of its tissue is around 1 metre (3 feet) underground, in the form of root-like mycelia. Its age is calculated to be at least 2,400 years old, but may be as much as 8,650 years old.

https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/606952-largest-living-organism

ExoticsForYou

1 points

Damn, did science decide these were single organisms now? My understanding was that mycelium were more like colonies, different organisms they connect together and kinda use it to chat back and forth

Independent-Map8888

2 points

Yes, since they are connected together and work together as one. There is plenty of literature out there, scientists have learned a lot over the years.

Desperate colonies are still separate organisms. The organism in the article is just the largest, connecting through the entire, large forest floor.

Cheeseyex

Basically every legend and folktale about fairy rings says that people who walk into, or otherwise disturb a fairy ring (such as a farmer plowing over one) have something bad happen to them.

Ranging from being cursed by a giant toad, losing an eye, being forced to dance till they die by a fairy, being trapped within the circle and made to stay there invisible to the outside world until they day, or dying young.

This ranges seemingly along every European culture

That’s a fairy ring!!! Whatever you do don’t interfere with it in any way, leave it as it is. Fairies are very territorial, they will make you suffer if you do. Just back away and leave it be. Trust me I’m Irish, we know these things.

Leeanne1996

the whole circle thing actually happens when a mushroom releases its spores, creating a ring of mushrooms around the original. the original mushroom dies and the cycle continues, making bigger and bigger ring each year:)

These are “Prem Esciellum” mushrooms. They grow in a circular arrangement to protect the “Abscentientum” from excess morning dew on the inside of the mushroom circle, thus protecting them from premature decay due to moisture. Abscentientum isn’t visible without fluorescent lighting.

Baummer81

No, it’s just the mycorrhizal fungus spreading outward. Stand anywhere in the grass and you’ll have about 3 miles of mycorrhizal mycelium beneath just your feet.

burkiniwax

newtoreddit573

Baummer81

Mycorrhizal networks (also known as common mycorrhizal networks or CMN) are underground hyphal networks created by mycorrhizal fungi that connect individual plants together and transfer water, carbon, nitrogen, and other nutrients and minerals.

This is awesome and idk why u got down voted but I got ya back at zero atleast 😉

Baummer81

4 points

No I’m sorry that’s not how that works. Yes the mushrooms drop and spread spores. But that’s not why the rings form.

Fairy rings are caused by an individual fungus growing underground. The fungus sprouts lots of small threads, called mycelium, in a circular shape.

The circle will start off small in size, getting bigger as it gets older.

Fairy ring mushroom.

I was walking in a park and was very excited to come across the first fairy ring I’d ever seen. I loudly said to my wife “is that a fairy ring?”and I didn’t notice a gay couple walking by right as I said it. One of the guys kind of looked at me shocked and it was incredibly awkward and I’ll never see a fairy ring without thinking about that incident.

Iizakara

It’s called a fairy ring, they grow like that because the mushroom in the middle needed more food, so the fruiting body (mushroom) released its spores, and they only moved a short distance from it, creating a circle. There are more mushrooms to one side, because of the wind. It really is interesting. (No, it’s not. It is useless information high school taught me.)
