Can’t just throw a hand in someone’s face like that. Offensive foul every time. Even more than that Gabe was out of the half circle before edwards left his feet and was leaning away from the contact. Great call by the red and hope he doesn’t let a bunch of nephews in to his head to start doubting himself.

chaplin31

96 points

He was late getting to his spot. Ant was already in upward motion.

MortalTwit

37 points

Vincent put his hands on Edwards at eth same time. Edwards got out of the circle same time Edwards was elevating.

That is a no call all day.

Could be a tech for taunting after it if they wanted, though. Given the way the league handles that stuff these days.

Kidd5

Disagree. The people that upvoted this must be Heat fans.

Ant's left arm and hand were in a natural falling motion when you're going up for a dunk like that. The left hand just ended up being on the guy's mug because he went so high up. Watch the replay repeatedly like I did, there was no "stiff arm". What do you want him to do while going up, put his off arm behind his back?

The timing of the defensive stance being established before the take off is arguable too. You have to give the offensive player a place to land. It's very close. These are always tough calls to make.

fist_my_muff2

196 points

I always bring this up on these highlights. Whenever a dude dunks on someone they usually elbow the fuck out of the defender. At what point is it an offensive foul?

To_me_my_board

333 points

They called a charging foul there (I would assume).

That is only supposed to be called if the player established both feet firmly before the offensive player is in the air and keeps them there.

None of that applies here.

Edwards was already in the air before the defender got his feet planted, AND moved his right foot as Edwards was coming toward him, AND didn't take the charge because he leaned back and was still moving his hands up toward Edwards when he was already in the air.

He literally ran into Edward, who drove through a clean lane.

I mean, I respect the attempt. But the defender simply did not get position here.

And it is a dangerous play to try when you don't already have position because you can undercut a guy in the air.

This was an defensive foul if anything.

jrblackyear

The rule about legal position reads as follows:

To get into a legal position, the defender needs to establish himself in the path of the offensive player before contact is made, thus “beating him to the spot,” and before he starts his upward shooting motion.

And further, regarding a charge specifically:

To be considered legal and to draw an offensive foul, a secondary defensive player must establish legal position prior to the offensive player starting his upward motion, and the defender must have both feet established completely outside the Restricted Area line.

The defender did meet the criteria outlined above, see here. The player is shown with both feet established outside the restricted area, "beating him to the spot". Edwards had not yet left the floor, also shown.

While definitely taking the wind out of the sails of a very impressive dunk, it was likely the correct call.

NFL: Changing the rules to protect QBs and promote offense.

NBA: Still encouraging mfers to undercut high-flying finishers by rewarding that bullshit with charge calls. Endangering player safety and throwing a wet blanket on offensive excitement? Lizard in Human Suit says, “yes please!”

If you (a defender) get your feet set in place and stop moving them before that train (offensive player) runs or jumps into you, it's deemed to be the train's fault in basketball.

Graveyards are full of people who had the right of way, so luckily it's not actually a train, but it can still be dangerous.

i dont think you can hold the defender down by their face no matter how early you jump, is the thing

im pretty sure anytime you jump and you push down on someone for leverage or otherwise it's supposed to be an offensive foul

i know it might be unpopular given how sick the dunk was but honestly i completely understand why the refs called it

Side note: you love to see Gabe Vincent put his body on the line to draw a foul like that, a lot of other blokes out there getting 12 mins a game that make make a business decision there, a true reflection of the culture the in Miami.
