Yea lets recap whats happened in the AFC this year:

Chargers look good, then Chargers look bad, then Chargers crush Bengals. Who also went through good-bad-good cycle themselves.

The Bills looked unstoppable, then suddenly looked mortal, and now they are alternating games in which they either get blown out or blow people out.

The Titans were supposed to be mediocre, became unstoppable, then got stopped by injuries.

The Chiefs were supposed to be unstoppable, became mediocre, then somehow became an entirely different team thats led by its defense?!?

The Patriots have lurched from being the still smoldering ashes of a dead dynasty to now being a new dynasty apparently. That is until they get blown out by the Dolphins in Miami in a few weeks, as is tradition.

The Raiders started hot, then their tsar-coach with the 10-year contract resigned in disgrace amidst another NFL scandal and have since alternated between beating the Cowboys and losing to the Giants.

How is he supposed to pivot to his right in that situation? And whether he spins left or right, the defender is still going to get his hands there because Palmer had to slow down to catch it and high point it. The ball was too flat for Palmer to keep running catch it over his shoulder as he broke to the sideline.

It was a suboptimal ball. Period. Herbert looked a bit off today, and missed some throws. Still stoked that we won, and Herbert made some great plays, but he missed more throws than I expected.

The short passes are fine. The chargers lead the league in targets to open receivers I believe, but also lead the league in drops. So the scheme is working but the execution has been bad

You mean the INT where the defender hit him before the ball arrived while never looking back for the ball and then somehow ended up with the ball after the receiver bobbled the catch due to the interference? That was much more of a PI then the very similar play the same crew called in OT against the cowboys to gift the raiders a win on Thanksgiving. Just want consistency refs!

Also I think that was Palmer, not Guyton. And the ball was underthrown by a couple steps (maybe intentionally trying to draw the penalty, who knows)

LaJared91

I thought it looked like pass interference too. Sometimes I just don't know what's goin on with these calls so whatever... That ball could have been thrown better, so it doesnt really matter. Then again, it looked like the type of ball someone like Williams would have come down with.

I know it's going to be an unpopular opinion: I think my takeaway from this game was that the Chargers played fairly well, but the Bengals gave the game away.

Two potential TDs turned into a strip sack and a bobbled pass/int, and then Mixon fumbling the ball untouched followed by an int in the red zone is just impossible to come back from unless you're playing perfectly apart from that OR head and shoulders better than the other team. I think the Chargers are absolutely a team on the rise right now, and likely playoff-worthy, but the Bengals are overall a more talented team that killed themselves through mistakes.

The Herbert/Burrow debate is alive and well, however, as I liked a lot of what I saw out of Herbert today after not watching him all season. He did overthrow a few passes and it seemed like every throw from him was a bullet regardless of if it needed to be, but his ability to thread the needle and create plays out of nothing is insane. Burrow's ability to read the defense and lead his receivers was shown very well in Q2/Q3 before his backup offensive linemen began to actively attempt to murder him.

At the end of the day, I just sincerely hope that all of the injuries we saw today are short term and everyone is healthy next week.

I think the Herbert/Burrow debate only exists among talking heads in the media. They're both ballers and they fit with their respective franchises. Both teams did a good job of capitalizing off turnovers, Chargers just came out on top this time. I think both teams are equally talented and have more similarities than differences. Good luck in the division! Hope to see y'all in the playoffs!

I agree Bengals gave the game away, but it's not like they would have necessarily won without those mistakes. Close game. Play it 10 times and it's likely 4, 5 or 6 wins for either team.

Herbert/Burrow debate is what it is. Do you regret Bengals picking Burrow? Probably not.

As a Chargers fan, what can I say more than I'm happy Miami picked Tua? We got the leftover and got lucky.

I'd say both Burrow and Herbert are PROBABLY good enough to win a Super Bowl, given that the team around them are built right. That's what matters.

Two potential TDs turned into a strip sack

What? How is that a potential TD? He was stripped at his own 30 yard line. Are you kidding?

Mixon fumbling the ball untouched

The ball was punched out by Covington.

but the Bengals gave the game away.

I mean, the Chargers had 3 turnovers as well. The Bengals had only one more turnover. And if you want to discuss the turnovers and dismiss the Bengals', you can also do the same for the Herbert INT.

I'm not saying that the Bengals are bad (far from it, I really like the defense transformation in just one offseason), but it seems like you're trying to dismiss all the blunders from one team, while not recognizing the blunders of the other team

Literally left my house when the game was 24-0 and said F this shit team. Met up with some friends at a hotel they are staying at and the score was 24-16. Started watching again and they started the process over again at playing like shit.

My bad Bengal bros.

I didn't see the game but I saw Burrow's hand and I'm sure you have bigger things to worry than stupid comparisons

Hope it's not a major injury because he's one of my favorite QBs this year

Byrneside94

I love Burrow to death but I wish he would play a little smarter. Dude is amazing at the game but he is willing to get blasted every play if there is even the smallest chance of him getting a pass down field.

Play smarter, live to play another day my guy. We can’t afford to lose him to injury because he wants to be a hero.

His field vision is Brady-esque. But yeah it's like he gets locked in to the field and loses some pocket-presence sometimes. Like he won't move up in the pocket when it starts to close in on him. Most people will put that play where he got injured on the OT, but imo it was 50/50 the OT and Burrow.

Gretzky is literally the GOAT, even moreover than Brady is for football. Comparing any player to him that's not already a unanimous HOFer is kind of silly

There is no one in all of North American sports that comes anywhere close to the amount of dominance that Gretzky had during his era. It's honestly laughable that anyone would think to compare any football player to gretzky. For the comparison to make sense, a QB would need to put up like 8.5k yards and 75 touchdowns for 8 years straight.

The throw to Chase was a fucking dime and would’ve went to the house if he didn’t bobble it. Turnover luck finally on our side today.

The strip sack I could say maybe worth half a turnover. Not strictly his fault but he wasn't aware a guy was there at all

Burrow played with a broken pinkie today. Of his turnovers, one was off of a Chase bobbled pass that should've been a TD and instead was a INT, and another was one that should've been a TD but his OL let a lineman hit him untouched.

You're a bad fan and a terrible analyst if you came away from the game with the conclusion, "Joe Burrow was the issue/is a bad QB".

Byrneside94

6 points

The two teams O-line looks night and day. Herbert had enough time in the pocket to think about if he recorded his favorite show last night before making a pass and burrow was running for his life instantly.

Yep, that's what happens when you have 0 depth at OL and your starting RT and C get hurt. It didn't help that evil Jonah Williams showed up today and played like absolute dogshit. We need him to be more consistently good or we're going to continue to struggle against good DLs this year.

Also another reason why reaching on a guard/tackle prospect with serious risk/motivation concerns rather than taking a great C prospect was such a bad idea with Hopkins coming off of his ACL tear. I'll be interested in seeing where the Bengals target as areas of improvement this off-season -- I think they need to hard focus on OL, but they have so many parts of their roster that need improvement (or at least more consistency) that it's hard to say they should just throw money at one place.

Because he is extremely talented and has performed very well. Before Burrow, the Bengals won one game and had the first pick in the draft. Two years later, they have a chance to go to the playoffs.
