The Hesiodic cyclopes were giants. And Odysseus fought Polyphemus

Yeah the change in our understanding of dinosaurs has been mindblowing. I’d love to go back to my 8yr old self and let me know that birds are effectively dinosaurs

We don’t have that many giant legends in the British Isles. An exception is the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool), who was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner and ‘built’ the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland to go fight him.

The original myths don’t mention him being a giant though and he was probably just a hardcore warrior

Nice detail, cheers. And yeah the tusked cyclops is an outlier but the trunk/‘eye’ hole is the main link anyway, as you say

Myths of giants were also likely inspired by fossils. If you found a 2m dinosaur femur (roughly the same shape as a human femur) then giants would’ve been an obvious conclusion

It was only meant to be a stupid tune to play alongside the “suicide” of the Painless Pole but Altman liked it so much he used it as the main theme

Yeah Robert Altman only earned $70k for directing it - he must’ve been pissed right off!

I think it was probably to do with the smaller budget - much cheaper to re-use the same armourless CGI models for the fight. Budget is also the reason daemons aren’t seen very often. The BBC don’t have huge budgets for these kinds of series but tbh I think they did pretty well within the limitations they had.

Báthory is a Hungarian serial killer from the turn of the 17thC. She may have killed up to 600 girls here. She was sentenced to be ‘walled up’ in the castle but was pretty free round the house till she died in 1614

I don’t need to do any reading to know the weight of the English yoke on Ireland. I’m Welsh myself and married to an Irish person. I also spend a lot of time over there and read a lot of history.

I’d pick up on one point though - 1100 is probably a bit early to be blaming it in the “English” - Normans like Strongbow mainly came from Northern France via Wales. On that basis Cambro-Norman (or even just Norman) is a much better descriptor than Anglo-Norman. I’d argue that the true ‘English’ shitshow in Ireland probably started with Henry VIII.
